A Career in Environmental Health
At a global level, environmental health professionals actively examine the human and environmental health impacts of contemporary world issues such as climate change, water access, acid rain, hazardous waste, ozone depletion, over-population and resource depletion. In Indigenous Australian settings and in developing countries, the focus is on the need to provide basic sanitation, waste management, sound buildings, and safe food and water.
The Australian Institute of Environmental Health (AIEH) has reported an Australia-wide shortage of environmental health practitioners. Graduates of this course are highly sought after for positions such as:
- environmental health officers in local and state government
- environmental consultants or risk assessors
- public health practitioners
- food safety officers
- air quality officers
- health promotion officers
- urban and rural environmental managers
With additional studies, graduates can move into health and building surveying or occupational health and safety. Major employers are state or local government and the private sector.
