Business Academic Skills

The development of business skills in the form of the application of information collection, analysis and evaluation, logical reasoning skills and communication skills relevent to business and economic issues.

Principles of Economics

This unit is an introduction to economic concepts and contemporary economic issues. It introduces students to basic concepts such as markets and their operation, the behaviour of firms, the efficiency and potential failings of free markets, the role of government, key macroeconomic variables and problems such as unemployment. It illuminates these concepts via application to contemporary economic issues and debates over different theoretical perspectives. This unit also exposes students to recent developments in economics via presentations by specialist guest lecturers.

Accounting Information for Managers

This unit provides exposure to financial and management accounting information from a user viewpoint. The unit aims to provide breadth of awareness and knowledge in relevant fields of accounting essential to decision making for managers.

Marketing Principles

This unit is a survey of the marketing process, introducing students to the marketing concept, strategic and marketing planning, marketing research, consumer and customer behaviour, issues of market segmentation, targeting and positioning as well as all the elements of the marketing mix (product/service, pricing, distribution and marketing communication strategies).

Management Dynamics

This unit provides an opportunity for students to engage with the dynamics of the management of organisations. Students will be introduced to the connection between the way work and systems are organised and managed and their impact on individuals and societies. This is achieved by using case based opportunities to examine real life contexts. This is an essential unit for business students that can be taken by any student needing a broad initial understanding of management.

Introduction to Business Law

This is an introductory law unit designed to introduce the fundamentals of law in a commercial context. The unit introduces students to the basic principles of law and the legal system as well as examining some of the major areas of law that impact on commercial dealings. This unit examines the structure of the legal system, the way law is made, legal reasoning and problem solving. The main areas of law covered include contracts, torts and agency.

Statistics for Business

This Level 1 unit introduces the basic concepts and techniques of statistics that are particularly relevant to problem solving in business. It also provides a sound base for more advanced study in statistics and forecasting in subsequent sessions. Topics include: presentation of data; descriptive statistics; the role of uncertainty in business decision making; hypothesis testing; and basic forecasting.

Introduction to Economic Methods

Introduction to Economic Methods will cover basic concepts in Mathematics and Statistics to help their understanding of subjects like accounting, management, marketing, finance, and economics. In addition, the analytical techniques, concepts and models that will be discussed in this unit will play a foundation role in a Business degree. Topics include: Use of summation signs; financial mathematics; differential calculus and its application in business; collection, analysis and interpretation of data using simple descriptive statistical methods; probability distributions, and hypothesis testing.

Advanced Business Seminars

A seminar series involving speakers from outside the university will present on current theoretical or practical issues affecting business and commerce. Students interested in this unit should contact the Unit Coordinator to see whether they qualify.

Business Leadership

This unit studies the research literature in business leadership and explores its application to early stages of a business or commerce career. Enrolment in this unit is by invitation only. Students interested in this unit should contact the Unit Coordinator to see whether they qualify.

Frontiers of Business Theory and Analysis

This unit looks at selected controversies in business, industry and commerce. Each selected issue will be examined in terms of the way in which the problem is defined, and competing definitions of the problem. Relevant theoretical perspectives will be examined and evaluated. Entrepreneurial Team

Ths unit is intended to provide an opportunity for high performing students to join a team to participate in a team which will either enter into a business competition or will perform a consulting project for a local business or a non-profit enterprise. There are many business degrees on offer, but few give you a real 'edge' over other graduates. The UWS Advanced Business Leadership program is an elite degree aimed at transforming today's brightest business minds into tomorrow's business leaders. Throughout the degree you'll be mentored and guided by leading business academics and you'll develop superior knowledge and confidence so you'll graduate a 'step ahead in your career'.

This course is a broadly based, multidiscipline course offering flexibility and choice through a range of 19 different key programs, each of which reflects a particular business discipline. The degree seeks to equip its students with a high level of knowledge relevant to business issues in general as well as knowledge relevant to a specific business discipline. The intention of the course is to provide a foundation for the development of Australia's future business leaders.

This course will be offered at the Parramatta campus only. However, students in the advanced BBC who wish to complete a key program that is not available at the Parramatta campus will be given approval to do so.

Duration

3 years full time or equivalent part-time.

Note: 'part-time' refers to study load, not to timetabling of evening classes.

Career Opportunities

This degree will equip students for management traineeships or management consultancy as well as for careers associated with the discipline in which they complete a key program. For further information on the Key Programs, refer to the Bachelor of Business and Commerce.

Assumed Knowledge

Mathematics and any two units of English.

Additional Selection Criteria

This course is made available to high-achieving students only. To be eligible for admission to the B Business and Commerce (Advanced Business Leadership), a student must attain a minimum UAI of 90.

Students must maintain a grade point average of 5 or above to remain in the course. Those who do not maintain this average will be transferred to the Bachelor of Business Commerce.

Dean's Scholarships

Dean's Scholarships valued at $5,000 per annum for up to four years, the fourth year being an Honours year. To be eligible to be considered for a Dean's Scholarship you need to:

  • apply through UAC by the on-time closing date of Friday 28 September 2007; and
  • have the Bachelor of Business and Commerce (Advanced Business Leadership) course listed as your first preference.

The top students (based on UAI) in each course will be awarded a Dean's Scholarship, and will also be eligible to participate in the Vice-Chancellor's Leadership Program for Students. For more information call the Course Information Centre on 1800 897 669.
